Identifying Research Priorities
A recent publication led by Univ.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Mag. Maria Kletečka-Pulker and Priv.-Doz. Dr. Atanas G. Atanasov from Danube Private University (DPU) explores exactly this question.
The publication, Bibliometric methods and applications in health sciences: a graphical review, was published in 2026 in the journal Current Research in Biotechnology. It highlights how bibliometric methods can be used to systematically analyse and visualise the rapidly growing body of scientific literature in the health sciences.
Bibliometric approaches make it possible to identify research priorities, thematic clusters, scientific networks, collaborations and emerging research trends. Their applications span areas such as disease research, clinical trials, public health, precision medicine, digital health, mental health and medical misinformation.
At the same time, the publication underlines the importance of critically interpreting bibliometric indicators. A high number of citations does not necessarily indicate scientific quality or agreement with the findings.
Looking ahead, the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning and semantic analysis offers exciting opportunities to gain an even deeper understanding of complex scientific knowledge landscapes.
