Systematic literature review
The study was conducted as part of the MKG Study Club under the leadership of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dritan Turhani. Its aim was to systematically assess the available epidemiological evidence on the prevalence of cleft lip and palate following the accident.
A total of 275 potentially relevant publications were identified. Following the assessment of the available literature, six studies were included in the final analysis.
Mixed findings
The studies reviewed did not provide consistent results. Some studies from Bavaria and the former GDR reported an increased prevalence of cleft lip and palate following the accident, while others found no significant changes.
These differences need to be considered in the context of varying study methodologies, regional differences in exposure and limitations in the available data.
No conclusive evidence
Based on the currently available evidence, a causal relationship between the Chernobyl accident and the prevalence of cleft lip and palate in Germany cannot be established. Due to the limitations of the available data, a possible association also cannot currently be determined conclusively.
The publication highlights both the importance of carefully evaluating historical health data and the need for further research in this field.
