DPU Researchers Publish Review on Multimodal Biosensing

A new publication in Advanced Electronic Materials examines multimodal approaches to the analysis of biomolecular interactions.

New Perspectives on the Analysis of Biomolecular Interactions

A new review published in Advanced Electronic Materials examines the potential of combining field-effect transistors (FETs) with complementary sensing technologies for the investigation of biomolecular interactions.

The publication, entitled “Beyond Charge: Field-Effect Transistors in Multimodal Biosensing Platforms for Biomolecular Interaction Studies”, was authored by researchers from Danube Private University (DPU): Roger Hasler, PhD, Ass.-Prof. Dr. Ciril Reiner-Rozman, Univ.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Christoph Kleber, Assoc. Prof. Jakub Dostalek, PhD, and Hon.-Prof. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Knoll.

FET-based biosensors show considerable potential for the label-free, real-time detection of biomolecular processes. However, interpreting the resulting signals can be challenging, as biomolecular interactions are not characterized by changes in charge alone.

The review therefore considers the combination of FETs with complementary technologies in the fields of optical, electrochemical, acoustic and scanning-probe sensing. Multimodal platforms can provide additional information on processes at biological interfaces, potentially supporting improved signal interpretation, greater measurement reliability and a more comprehensive understanding of biomolecular interactions.

The authors highlight the particular potential of combining FETs with surface plasmon resonance (SPR). This approach enables the simultaneous investigation of changes in charge and mass during biomolecular interactions.
