
DPU research shows that early radiological changes can reliably predict the long-term success of immunotherapy in patients with lung cancer.
Study published in Cancer Imaging demonstrates the prognostic value of early radiological changes during immunotherapy
A research team led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Julia Furtner-Srajer, Professor at the Danube Private University (DPU), has demonstrated that early radiological changes can predict long-term treatment outcomes in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.
The study analyzed imaging data from 122 patients, with scans evaluated in a blinded manner according to iRECIST criteria. A reduction in tumor size at the first follow-up imaging, performed 8–12 weeks after treatment initiation, was associated with sustained clinical benefit, improved overall response, and longer progression-free and overall survival. The association was particularly strong for pulmonary lesions and lymph node metastases.
These findings highlight the potential of radiological imaging to provide an early indication of treatment success and further support the advancement of personalized cancer care.
