Standardized Definitions for Treatment-Related MRI Abnormalities
An international, multidisciplinary expert group has developed the first standardized consensus for defining MRI abnormalities following radiotherapy for intracranial central nervous system tumours. Univ. Prof. Dr. Julia Furtner-Srajer from Danube Private University (DPU) was also a member of the expert group.
The results have been published in the renowned journal Neuro-Oncology under the title “ESTRO, ESNR and EORTC consensus-based definition for MRI abnormalities after radiotherapy for intracranial central nervous system tumours.”
The consensus was developed through a three-round Delphi process. Experts in radiation oncology, neuroradiology, neuro-oncology, medical oncology and neurosurgery evaluated the proposed definitions and criteria.
A key outcome of the work is the introduction of the term Treatment-Related Imaging Abnormality (TRIA). Clear definitions were established for MRI abnormalities occurring after radiotherapy.
The expert group also identified important information that should already be included on MRI referral forms. This is intended to help ensure that radiological findings can be assessed as reliably as possible within the relevant clinical context.
