Improving the diagnosis and treatment of radiation necrosis
Radiation necrosis can closely resemble tumor recurrence on imaging. The key question is: Has the tumor returned – or is the finding a consequence of previous radiotherapy?
An international expert panel of the European Association for Neuro-Oncology (EANO) has now published a comprehensive consensus statement on this challenging issue. Among the contributors is Univ.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Julia Furtner-Srajer, PhD, MBA, Deputy Head of the DPU MIAAI Research Group. The publication has appeared in the renowned journal Neuro-Oncology.
Using a three-stage Delphi process, the experts developed 57 recommendations, 53 of which achieved at least 80% agreement. For diagnosis, perfusion MRI and amino acid PET play an important role, while histopathology remains the gold standard.
The consensus also provides guidance on treatment options – ranging from corticosteroids and bevacizumab to surgical procedures and LITT (Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy).
The EANO consensus therefore provides an important foundation for improving the diagnosis and treatment of radiation necrosis in neuro-oncology practice.
